After more than 20 years in the beauty industry, I know how important your nighttime routine is.

While we sleep, our skin goes into repair mode, which makes our evening habits just as important as the morning skincare routine we’d never think about skipping. Over the years, I’ve found a few rules I always stick to when it comes to looking after my skin.

Never, ever sleep in makeup

It might sound obvious, but even skipping one night of cleansing can cause problems. Makeup clogs pores, traps bacteria and stops your skin from breathing properly. It also gets in the way of your skin’s natural repair process while you sleep.

I always cleanse thoroughly, no matter how tired I am. A few minutes at the sink makes all the difference. Using the right cleanser for your skin type is also important. If you use a face cleanser that is too harsh for your skin, it can damage your skin’s natural barrier and leave it feeling tight and dry, leading to irritation and breakouts.

Don’t over-exfoliate

I love how exfoliating makes skin feel fresh and smooth, but too much can do more harm than good. I avoid using strong acids or scrubs right before bed, especially if my skin is feeling dry or sensitive. Instead, I stick to gentle exfoliation once or twice a week and always follow up with a hydrating serum and moisturiser.

Never skip moisturiser

Even if my skin feels oily, I never go to bed without moisturising. At night, your skin loses more moisture than during the day. A good moisturiser helps to keep the skin barrier strong and locks in hydration and nutrients from your serums. I adjust my routine based on the season or how my skin is feeling, but moisturiser is non-negotiable.

When applying my evening moisturiser, I always make sure to use a specially formulated night cream. Night creams are formulated to support the skin’s repair process while you sleep, whereas day creams are lighter and often include SPF, which you don’t need at night. Using the right formula helps lock in hydration and nutrients, keeping the skin barrier healthy.

Don’t risk trying a new product

Nighttime is not the time to experiment. If your skin reacts to something new while you sleep, you might not notice until it has already caused irritation. I always test new products in the morning so I can keep an eye on how my skin responds. If there is any stinging, redness or discomfort, I can remove it straight away.

Avoid sharing tools – and keep yours clean!

This is a rule I stick to day and night. Sharing makeup brushes, applicators, or skincare tools can easily transfer bacteria, viruses and fungi between people. This can lead to breakouts, eye infections, cold sores and other skin irritations. I always keep my own tools clean and separate. It is a simple habit that helps protect skin health and prevent avoidable issues.

I get it. After a long, busy day, it’s tempting to just fall into bed and skip the skincare. But those few extra minutes at night really do make a difference.

While you sleep, your skin is repairing itself from the stress, pollution and sun exposure it has faced during the day. Giving it a proper cleanse, the right treatments and applying a high-quality night moisturiser helps that process along, so you wake up with skin that looks fresher, feels smoother and stays healthier in the long run.

  • These are all great tips and I’m glad I’m doing the right things for my skin.

  • Lots of useful tips here. No matter how tired I am or how late it is, I always remove makeup before going to bed. There’s nothing worse than irritation and makeup smudged on your pillowcase. Sharing tools is an obvious tip. I need to be more strict with applying moisturiser of a night. If I’m tired or a bit lazy, I will skip on this. Will try harder.

  • Some very helpful tips there. I must admit I have been known to be a bit naughty on the makeup side of things. When I’ve paid to have it done for a special event, I have left it on, so I still looked made up the next day with a bit of touching up!

  • I agree 100% with this article.
I have always taken good care of my skin and believe me it pays off. People are often surprised when they find out how old I am and I love that.

Before bed I ALWAYS remove all makeup by usinf a cleansing oil which i then follow with a cream cleanser, toner, Pre Essence, serum, eye cream and Night moisturiser,

  • I’m a little envious that some people can skip moisturising after a shower or before bed, my skin is so thirsty in the evening and absolutely needs moisturiser to lock in hydration. I love using a thick cream moisturiser before bed. My favourite product feels so luxe and rich on and leaves me feeling smooth when I wake up

  • Just the gentle reminder I needed to prioritise facial cleansing and moisturizing before bed which I’ll honestly admit I’m lazy as heck for. I have all the products just sitting around, barely using them and it’s fair to say, I needed this push. Thanks OP for sharing her experience and advice.

  • Excellent tips. I always cleanse but sometimes skip the moisturizer because I want my skin to be product free every now and then.

  • I wish I could go back and tell this to my teenage self! After a big night out I would just come home and crash… and then wonder why I have pimples. Lol
I shower every evening and then applying my night time moisturiser and my eye cream. Pretty simple but works for me

  • I love and live by all these recommendations. I’ve never been one to sleep with make up on, dirty pillow cases just mean more gunk on your skin. My nightly routine is to apply my body oil, facial oil, facial moisturiser, tie my hair loosely with a silk scrunchie, lip mask, silk hair bonnet, hand cream. Seems ott but I wake up feeling nourished and lush.

  • An Interesting article. I think back to those late nights out when I was young and how easy it was to just crash with my makeup on. Thankfully I got past that. I definitely wouldn’t try new products before bed as I often have reactions to anything too strong. I’ll make sure I don’t skip the moisturising.

  • These tips are definitely ones i stick by myself. Never ever sleep in make up or anything! A cleansed skin thats moisturised is the only way. Plus you dont want to be adding bacteria onto your pillows too! A great tip with not trying new things at night – this is a new one for me.
