There are certain things women are supremely talented at putting off. Booking a dentist appointment (for ourselves). Replacing our worn-out bras. And finding time for a hair appointment.
Somewhere around the third week of watching our greys infiltrate our roots, we realise we’ve put it off for too long. And this week the budget and schedule just doesn’t allow for an expensive, three-hour salon visit.
Sometimes you just have to take matters into your own hands, which is why so many women are turning to supermarket hair dye – and absolutely loving the results.
And while covering a few greys or freshening up your colour might sound like a fairly ordinary little beauty job, the Beauty Truth members who recently tried Clairol Nice’n Easy had some surprisingly strong things to say about what happened afterwards.

Not just about the colour. Not just about how easy it was. But about how they felt when they looked in the mirror.
Reviewer Cassie put it perfectly:
“My hair looks so much nicer and more alive. It has covered my grey hairs at the back which I’m so happy about. My hair now feels so smooth and soft. Im delighted about the results. I feel like a rockstar now.”
Cassie, WA
For some Beauty Truth members, colouring their hair was a way of feeling refreshed after months of putting themselves last. For others, it was about getting a bit of their confidence back without having to organise a salon visit around the rest of family life.
“I was really happy to try Clairol Nice’n Easy 3.5 Darkest Brown, especially after struggling with postpartum regrowth and greys. I wanted an easy way to freshen up my colour at home without having to drag my 3 kids to the hairdressers, also keeping it budget friendly… My hair looked refreshed, my regrowth was covered and the colour gave me that much-needed feeling of having myself together again.”

When hair doesn’t feel like a big job
The practical side of the home hair dye experience scored strongly too with the Beauty Truth review team.
Across the 278 reviews, Clairol Nice’n Easy received an average rating of 4.67 out of 5, while ease of application scored 4.74 out of 5.
More than four in five reviewers, 84.2 per cent, selected ‘easy and convenient’ as something they associated with the experience.
“Application-wise, it was on par with any other hair colourant I’ve used – not overly drippy or messy, so no dramas there.”
Amanda, NSW
‘I like my hair again!’
The reviews weren’t only about getting rid of regrowth. Women repeatedly mentioned how their hair felt afterwards, with 76.3 per cent selecting “soft and smooth after colouring”.
“I absolutely loved the conditioner that comes with it — it left my hair feeling so soft afterwards.”
Amanda, NSW
Others talked about shine, smoothness and their hair looking more alive after colouring, and that seems to be part of the reason the experience generated such enthusiastic reactions.
It wasn’t just about covering greys, it was about falling in love with their hair again.

Colour choice matters
There was also some really useful advice hidden among the overwhelmingly positive reviews, particularly around choosing a shade.
A number of women found their finished colour darker than they expected, although several still said they were happy with the overall result.
“This hair colour has great grey coverage but the end result was darker than I had expected so next time I will get a shade lighter as I really enjoyed the whole process.”
Alicia, SA
So if you’re standing in the supermarket aisle trying to work out which box to take home, the usual advice still applies: pay close attention to your starting colour rather than relying solely on the picture on the front.
It’s all about the feels
If you’re sitting on the fence about supermarket hair dye, reading the Beauty Truth Clairol Nice’n Easy reviews should be mandatory!
92.8 per cent of reviewers said they would buy Clairol Nice’n Easy again, while 96.8 per cent said they would recommend it.
But perhaps the most interesting part of the trial isn’t those numbers, but the language women used to describe themselves afterwards.
Their hair looked “more alive”. They felt “refreshed”. They felt like they had “myself together again”.
And one woman felt like a rockstar.
Maybe that’s why these little beauty jobs matter more than we sometimes admit. It’s not necessarily about looking completely different.
Sometimes it’s about finally doing the thing you’ve been putting off, catching your reflection afterwards and thinking, there I am.
The insights in this article come from a Beauty Truth consumer trial of Clairol Nice’n Easy.
